Manuka honey can be used to combat some of the most difficult to treat infections that are resistant to strong antibiotics though.

Stopping attachment also prevents the formation of biofilms, which can protect bacteria from antibiotics and allow them to cause persistent infection.

The results of recent work in the laboratory showed that honey can make MRSA more sensitive to antibiotics such as oxacillin, thus effectively reversing antibiotic resistance.

Professor Cooper said, "This shows that existing antibiotics may be more effective against drug-resistant infections when used in combination with honey manuka.Apa we need to do now is find a combination of more antibiotics and do some clinical work on patients."

"This (manuka honey) can be applied to the wound and used in combination with antibiotics to treat infections that are resistant," he said as quoted by the BBC.

But he warned people not to try the same thing at home with the honey being sold in stores.

"This is not recommended. We have been using medical grade honey, not a product that you buy in stores," said Cooper.
