The highly visible effects on children who live in California agricultural areas where they and their mothers are also potentially exposed to pesticides through agricultural products they consume.
Suspected pesticide known as organophosphates, which kill insects or pests by damaging their nervous system and brain.
But this research does not prove that exposure to organophosphate can disrupt brain development of infants and children. This is definitely impossible to confirm these findings since there is no ethical for scientists to designate some of the children randomly to be exposed to pesticides.
But, Brenda Eskenazi, one of the authors of the study, said Maih there is one evidence that can support these findings.
Although organophosphates are no longer used to house seranggabdi repellent products, but this substance is still commonly used in the agricultural sector.
Two studies, conducted by researchers from Mt. Sinai Medical Center and Columbia University, observed the children who live in New York City, while Eskenazi and colleagues studied 329 children and their mothers in the Salinas Valley in California. Apparently all the studies that found an association between exposure to pesticides in pregnant women with low IQ in their children at the age of 7 years.
In a study in the Salinas Valley, the researchers observed signs of exposure to pesticides in the urine taken from the mother during pregnancy and then of their children.
The research team found that each 10-fold increase in levels of organophosphates were detected during pregnancy associated with lower IQ scores by 5.5 points overall in their children when entering the age of 7 years.
In fact, carrying 20 percent of children whose mothers may be exposed to pesticides at least, have an IQ score 7 points higher on average than 20 percent of children born to mothers exposed to pesticides at most.
Eskenazi advises pregnant women to reduce exposure to pesticides, among other things to keep the insects do not enter the house. It also can be done by using organic products, which are free of pesticides. And if not possible, either by washing fruit or vegetables with antiseptic soap and under running water.
The third study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives edition of 21 April.
