Four out of five children diagnosed with Down Syndrome (DS) born to mothers aged early 30s or younger, according to a senior medical officer at the Child Development Centre (CDC).
In an interview with The Brunei Times, Dr Tan Silven said that evidence from studies around the world shows that 80 percent of babies born to mothers suffering from DS younger than 35 years.
"Surprisingly, the average age of a mother of a baby with Down syndrome is 28 years," said Dr Tan Silven in an interview when commemorate World Down Syndrome Day recently as reported by The Brunei Times. "When people say 'Oh, you're a young mother, your child will be safe from Down's Syndrome', it's not true."
He also said that the baby is born with the syndrome of young mothers may be a little "different" from the DS
babies born to older mothers.
"This is known as Mosaic Down Syndrome, which means that some cells contain Down (Syndrome) and some do not," he said. Children with Down Syndrome this type, tend to have fewer defects but can not be beaten flat.
"At this moment in Brunei there are about six babies born each year with the syndrome, about 1 compared to 1000," he said. "The birth rate in the hospital King's wife Saleha Pengiran Child (Ripas) about 6,000 years, which is comparable to the state other, so the statistics are also almost the same. "
Another risk for the DS also includes father's age. "Dad older may also increase the risk of DS associated with other genetic chromosomal abnormalities," he said.
In Brunei the mothers underwent blood tests to detect Untk DS early on, of various age ranges. "Pregnant women also do ultrasound. This step needs to be done to detect problems early on," he said.
In short lecture, Dr. Silven said that currently there is no one knows what causes the additional copy of chromosome 21, the root of the problem of the DS.
"This can happen either from father or mother and no one to blame," he said.
DS is known as trisomy 21, a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of chromosome 21 extra. Trisomy 21 is known by the name of DS after John Langdon Down described the syndrome in 1866.
