"If we can confirm these findings, there may be a little blessing for women who experience menopausal symptoms, because symptoms are often actually reduce the quality of life for women," he said.
For the study published in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention online edition of January 26, Li's team put the question to 1437 postmenopausal women, 988 of whom had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The women aged between 55 and 74 years were asked about symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, vaginal dryness, irregular menstrual cycles and bleeding a lot, depression and feeling anxiety.
The researchers found that women who experience hot flashes, most have a very low risk of breast cancer, which is the second largest cause of cancer death among U.S. women.
In fact, for women with the most severe menopausal symptoms, the relative risk of developing one of the two types of breast cancer the most common - invasive lobular carcinoma and ductal invasive - fell an average of 50 percent, compared with women who did not report symptoms of menopause.
In 2002, a large-scale study in the United States to HRT (estrogen and progestin) was stopped early because of an increased risk of breast cancer for women who undergo hormone therapy. Li said that since it is known that estrogen and progesterone play a role in breast cancer. "These findings give us more explanation about what can cause or prevent breast cancer," said Li. "We're certainly not going to soothe the symptoms of menopause that women can reduce breast cancer risk. But clearly, if we can better understand the underlying biological mechanisms, it will certainly be able to assist in developing preventive strategies (breast cancer)," he said.

Breast cancer oncologist, Dr. Stefan Gluck, who is also professor at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami, said the study is a small but important in understanding breast cancer.
This study also confirms the notion that high levels of estrogen may increase the risk of breast cancer. "But we do not have proof that if [women] have less estrogen, so they are less likely to suffer from breast cancer."
According to Gluck, a reduced risk of breast cancer is quite large. "At age 50, an average woman has a 2 percent risk of developing breast cancer, and if he was experiencing symptoms of menopause then the risk would drop to just 1 percent," he said.
Similarly, a woman 80 years had a 14 percent risk of developing breast cancer, and if he was experiencing symptoms of menopause, the risk is trimmed down to just 7 percent.
