Smoking is known to increase risk of breast cancer for women who have normal weight and overweight, but for those who are obese it is not.
This is the first finding that the effect of weight on breast cancer risk for women who smoke, and although some, other studies have confirmed this problem, this does not mean smoking is safe for women who are very overweight, the researchers said in the new study.
"Smoking is a strong risk factor for many other diseases other than breast cancer, like lung cancer and heart disease," said Luo Juhua, a scientist at West Virginia University.
Luo, who led the new study, presented its findings at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Orlando, Fla., Sunday (3 / 4).
Obesity has long been known as risk factors for breast cancer, but studies linking smoking with breast cancer is quite weak. Last March, Luo published the results of studies that found that there is an increased risk of breast cancer by 16 percent among postmenopausal women who smoked compared with women who did not smoke.
In the study, the research team involving 76 628 women in the study of long-titled Women's Health Initiative, funded by the U.S. government, and were recorded 3378 cases of breast cancer.
Lou The new study looked at more closely to the same woman on the basis of body mass index (BMI).
Those with normal weight or slightly overweight, with a BMI below 30, more likely to develop breast cancer if they smoked, the risk increased by 16 percent for those who smoked for 10 to 29 years and 25 percent for those who smoke during 30 to 49 years.
However, the research team found no increased breast cancer risk for smokers who are obese (BMI 30 or more) than those who do not smoke with the same weight.
"This should be interpreted with caution because for the first time the study found an association of smoking with breast cancer differ based on one's level of obesity," said Susan Gapstur, vice president of epidemiology at the American Cancer Society. "Other studies have confirmed this relationship."
